Maca supplement reviews
“I use this Maca to keep my hormones in balance, as everyone should due to the countless xeno estrogens that pollute our environment. For an added effect, I will sometimes add raw Maca powder along with this extract, simply to round out the other important nutrients and enzymes found in Maca. This is the best Maca product available at the time of this writing. Thank you, Liftmode!” - psgrantham87, Liftmode user review
“I've been wanting to take Maca for a long time now. I tried once before with a normal powder and the stuff tasted awful. I can normally keep down about anything since I take all sorts of herbs in water everyday and I've done some aggressive cleansing that other people wouldn't normally try. But for whatever reason, I previously couldn't handle Maca until taking this Liftmode Maca.” – John, Liftmode user review

What is Maca?
Maca root has a very long history of use – over 2000 years ago it was first recorded being used in the Andes for its aphrodisiac effects. The plant was so useful and revered that evidence shows it was at some stages used as a currency. You may ask: what is Maca? It is a biennial plant endemic to the Andes, which grows at around 4000m in altitude, in intense cold and high winds, and is used both as a vegetable and for its legendary aphrodisiac effects on both men and women. The scientific name of Maca is Lepidium meyenii. Maca was traditionally used boiled, as boiling the plant appears to activate the chemicals.
Maca root extract benefits/effects
Important active chemical groups in the Maca root are Macaene, Macamides, sterols, and glucosinolates. Different Maca plants contain different ratios of these active chemical groups, and different ratios produce different effects. LiftMode Maca root extract is from a standardised set of plants so the effects of our product will always be consistent.
Sexual desire is often thought to be controlled by testosterone levels in both men and women. While testosterone does play a role in sexual desire and performance (low serum testosterone levels are associated with low sexual desire), every human body is different and reacts differently to varying levels of hormones – some will see huge effects from a tiny increase in testosterone, while others might see none. This is what makes Maca root extract special – it increases sexual desire without affecting the hormone levels. It is also special because the Maca root extract works in women too!
This is from a recent study by researchers at the Universidad Peruana on the aphrodisiac and fertility enhancing effects of Maca extract (Cordova et al., 2003):
“In a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel trial, Maca at doses of 1.5 g or 3.0 g improved sexual desire in healthy men. Data obtained at 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment demonstrated that Maca improved sexual desire as compared with placebo at 8 and 12 weeks of treatment.”
“Data in the literature suggest that testosterone should not be used to improve sexual desire in men with normal serum testosterone levels. Treatment with Maca may be an interesting alternative, since it improves sexual desire (Córdova et al. 2001) as reported previously, without affecting serum testosterone levels as has been demonstrated in the present study.”
It appears that Maca root extract is able to increase sperm count in men, without necessarily increasing testosterone levels:
“In a study in 9 apparently healthy men who had received Maca for 4 months showed an increase in seminal volume, sperm count, and sperm motility. Serum hormone levels (LH, FSH, prolactin, estradiol, and testosterone) in men were not affected by treatment with Maca.”
There is evidence that Maca extract may be able to improve learning capacity as well as memory in mammalian brains, based on the results of two studies on Maca root extract use in rats. In both studies, the rats were seen to have increased memory as well as learning capacity when compared to the placebo. Human studies to verify this are yet to be done, and there is no traditional use of Maca extract in the Andes for brain power increase. Maca root is not known to cause negative side effects, other than gas or stomach upset for some who are sensitive to the complex carbohydrates find in the root. LiftMode Maca extract is free of the starch like molecules that cause this side effect, so it seems likely that there are no Maca root extract dangers, which is why Maca is generally regarded as safe.
Maca root recommended dosage
The standard serving size for Maca is between 1 – 4 grams daily. Dosage is dependent on the sample quality and percentage of the extract. LiftMode’s Maca extract is standardised to 60% Macamides (active chemicals), and is therefore more potent than many other Maca root extracts.
Maca extract side effects / warnings
Several recent studies have shown that responsible Maca use has no negative side effects in humans or animals. From thousands of years of use in the Andes, there have been no recorded cases of human toxicity caused by consumption of Maca. However, please read through WebMD In a study on 600 Peruvians in the central Andes, Maca root extract was shown to be beneficial and have no negative side effects on any of the subjects.
