Centrophenoxine (2-Dimethylaminoethyl (4-chlorophenoxy)acetate) is a nootropic compound derived from the choline mimetic DMAE. DMAE is found naturally in the body and is prominent in fatty fish. Centrophenoxine is a form of DMAE with higher bioavailability, but it may have unique properties as well.
Often touted as a choline supplement, DMAE and Centrophenoxine are not technically acetylcholine precursors. Instead, DMAE acts on the same receptors as choline and may yield similar results without the side effects associated with other choline supplements.
On top of its cholinergic properties, Centrophenoxine acts as a strong antioxidant in the brain. Research indicates it may reduce the accumulation of beta-amyloid deposits in the aging brain. Centrophenoxine may increase the internal water content in neurons, which is believed to counteract age-related cognitive decline. Centrophenoxine also decreases lipofuscin buildup, which may promote protein expression and glucose uptake.
Centrophenoxine should not be consumed by pregnant people due to possible Teratogenic properties of its endogenous metabolite DMAE.
