What is Myo-Inositol?

 

Myo-Inositol is commonly referred to simply as Inositol. It is sometimes classified as a vitamin, but it is actually not a true vitamin because it is very common in food sources and can be synthesized naturally by our bodies.[1] It forms part of the glucose metabolism system (the system to convert sugar into energy) and also acts as an important signalling molecule in many biological processes.

 

A lack of inositol in the diet does not seem to cause negative health effects, probably because it is easily synthesized by our bodies. It is also quite uncommon to find people with Myo-Inositol deficiency because it is actually very prevalent in our diets. Most foods contain a small amount of Inositol, and a healthy, varied diet usually provides more than enough dietary Inositol.[2]

 

Nevertheless, Myo-Inositol supplements provide an effective way to help to promote general health and well-being. In larger amounts than what is commonly consumed, Myo-Inositol may be effective in helping the body to maintain healthy hormone levels. It may also increase the body's sensitivity to Insulin - especially in women with hormone problems - which has the potential to help regulate blood sugar and maintain a healthy circulatory system.[3] At higher doses, Myo-Inositol supplements have been found to been effective at reducing feelings of stress.[4]

 

Inositol Effects / Benefits

 

1.     Helps to maintain healthy hormone levels in women

 

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder affecting roughly 10-15% of women around the world.[5] The underlying causes of PCOS are still being researched. PCOS is known as a ‘silent killer’ because of its links to the development of other medical disorders including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease.[6] Other difficult symptoms include excess hair growth, male-pattern baldness, mood changes, anxiety, irregular periods, and acne. These symptoms are thought to be a result of impaired insulin resistance and the resulting unnaturally high levels of testosterone in PCOS-diagnosed women.[7]

 

Researchers have performed a number of studies looking into the potential benefits of Myo-Inositol supplementation, some of which have focused on Inositol supplements in women with PCOS. One of the major benefits of Myo-Inositol supplements is to help support a healthy hormone balance and insulin sensitivity, especially in women who struggle with improper hormone levels. [8]

 

Supplementation with 2000 mg of Inositol daily, for 12 weeks, has been shown to significantly boost vitality in some women. [9] Even in low doses (200 mg daily), Inositol supplements have been shown to help support healthy women's fertility. [10]

 

2.     May help to maintain healthy blood sugar and blood pressure

 

Our bodies produce insulin as a response to varying levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin’s job is to facilitate the breakdown of sugar, as part of a big biochemical pathway. Insulin resistance means that our bodies are resistant to the effect of insulin, which often results in high blood sugar levels.[11] In response to the detection of high sugar levels, the body generates more insulin, creating an effect called high blood insulin.

 

Myo-Inositol is part of the important biochemical pathway that breaks down sugar (glucose). It is produced naturally and is broken down into two molecules: P-IPG and A-IPG. These two molecules have a synergistic relationship that helps to regulate the breakdown of sugar and to maintain important physiological functions.[12]

 

Inositol supplementation appears to help regulate the ratio of P-IPG and A-IPG, helping to restore normality in otherwise dysfunctional P-IPG and A-IPG relationships. The effect of this is that Myo-Inositol may have a helpful role in supporting healthy blood sugar levels.[13] In some studies, researchers found that Myo-Inositol had the potential to promote a healthy circulatory system and even support the metabolism of glucose, in moderate dosages. [14]

 

3.     Anti-stress and calming effects

 

Inositol has potent calming and stress-reducing effects at large dosages (around 4 g to 18 g daily). The first study to show this was an animal study, which showed that rats performed better in stress-response tests after having been treated with Myo-Inositol.[15]  In one human study, research indicated that Inositol may be at least as effective as a common anxiolytic, with fewer reported side-effects. [16]

 

At least human study has shown the potential mood-boosting effects from using an Inositol supplement. In this study, high doses of Inositol (12g daily, for 4 weeks) significantly reduced symptoms of decreased mood in the participants. [17] However, these mood-boosting effects do not seem to work in people who are diagnosed with depression and are resistant to SSRI treatment. [18] This suggests that the anti-stress effects of Myo-Inositol are related to serotonin concentrations in the brain.

Myo-Inositol Recommended Dosage

 

Recommended usage of inositol supplements varies depending on the desired effects. To help with hormonal balance, and to help maintain a healthy circulatory system, dosage appears effective around the 2000 - 4000 mg range.

 

For anti-stress effects, a far higher dosage of around 8 - 12 g daily appears to be effective, according to recent studies. It is important to note that many of the benefits of Inositol supplementation become far more significant with prolonged use. In most studies, results peaked after around 4 weeks of daily use.

 

Inositol Side Effects / Warnings

 

Inositol side effects are minimal which is one of its greatest benefits. In one study, the effects of extremely high dosages (30g daily) were examined. The only significant side effects experienced by most people were mild gastrointestinal upset. The same study was conducted over a 3-month period and also found that prolonged use of Inositol appears to be very safe.[19]

 

Several studies have been conducted on pregnant women using inositol supplements and no adverse effects have yet been found. [20]

 

Important for men: Inositol and Testosterone

 

There is a fair amount of online information relating to lowered testosterone levels after inositol dosage. However, it is important to note that the results which showed lowered testosterone levels were found in studies focussed on women with PCOS - a hormonal disorder that produces insulin resistance and abnormally high testosterone levels.

 

Inositol is effective at helping to support a healthy insulin sensitivity and, therefore, helping to regulate healthy androgen (testosterone) levels in women with unbalanced hormones. So far, there have been no studies on men to show that Inositol directly lowers testosterone levels. If anything, it helps to support a healthy circulatory system in men. 

 

Losing Weight with PCOS

 

Many women search online for how to lose weight. D-chiro-Inositol and Myo-Inositol are two forms of Inositol powder that are often used by women looking to lose weight. Myo-Inositol supplements have been studied for their potential ability to help women to lose weight. In one such study, the effects of metformin and Inositol powder on body composition of women with PCOS were studied.

 

The Italian study found that body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and hip circumference were all significantly reduced in the participants who took metformin with Myo-Inositol. Unfortunately, the effects of Inositol alone were not considered in this study. [21]

 

However, in 2016, researchers published a systematic review (a study that examines the results of all previous literature on a subject) of the effects of different forms of Inositol in women with hormone imbalances. The researchers pointed out that one of the side effects of metformin – often used to treat hormone imbalance – is weight gain. [22] Taking this into consideration, the case for using Myo-Inositol supplements to lose weight is strengthened.

 

Vitamin B8

 

Myo-Inositol is sometimes called ‘vitamin B8’, and is often grouped with other B-vitamins. Importantly, vitamin B8 is not accepted in the scientific community. The chemical compound adenosine monophosphate (AMP) was once thought to be the true vitamin B8. Later, this was changed to Myo-Inositol.

 

B-vitamins are water soluble vitamins that have essential roles in many physiological functions. Importantly, most B-vitamins cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be consumed in the diet. Myo-Inositol is not a true vitamin and is not considered a real B-vitamin. Furthermore, Inositol is produced by the body in a number of metabolic processes. Forms of Inositol

 

There are a number of different forms of Inositol that are found in nature or are available as dietary supplements. The most commonly used form of Inositol is called Myo-Inositol and is often sold as Inositol powder. Myo-Inositol makes up around 90% of the Inositol found in the human body, which is why it is the most often used and the most effective form of Inositol powder that people take. The second most prevalent form of Inositol is called scyllo-Inositol.[24]

 

In fact, there are nine different forms of Inositol that can be found. These forms are called stereoisomers of the parent compound, Inositol. Stereoisomers are chemically very similar but have different groups joined in certain places, changing the orientation and spin of the compound. The nine forms of Inositol are listed below:

  6. Scyllo-Inositol
