Quercetin (or Quercitin) is a flavanoid found in many foods and vegetables with potent antioxidant properties. Quercetin Background

 

This supplement (also known as Que, 3, 3′, 4′, 5, 7-pentahydroxyflvanone or 3, 3′, 4′, 5, 7-pentahydroxy-2-phenylchromen-4-one) is a naturally occurring plant pigment or flavonoid that is found in many foods include citrus fruits and vegetables, olive oil and red wine. It also probably the most studied flavanol. The primary benefit of this supplement is its powerful antioxidant effects, helping to destroy harmful free radicals in the body. It is known for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties. [1]

 

Other benefits include support of respiratory health (by acting as an antihistamine), support of cardiovascular health, stabilization of normal blood pressure, reduction of cortisol, boosting energy, and promotion of general good health. This supplement is often sold online as a stack containing a Que-bromelain complex. Bromelain is a protease found in pineapple, with anti-inflammatory properties.[2]

 

A recent review looked into this supplement’s benefits for the body and found it to be a highly effective compound for promoting good health. Researchers indicated that its most important health-promoting properties related to its antioxidant effects in terms of free-radical scavenging and protecting the body against oxidative stress. Researchers also quoted studies pointing to this supplement’s ability to promote a healthy cardiovascular system and to help promote mental focus. It may also have a role to play in regulating allergic response in some people. [3]

Quercetin Benefits / Effects

 

1.     Anti-inflammatory

 

One of this supplement’s major roles (in its natural form) is as an anti-inflammatory agent. Histamine is produced by the body’s immune system in reaction to allergic substances like pollen, dust, animal hair and air-borne bacteria. It results in the typical cold-like symptoms or hay fever, i.e. red, swollen eyes, puffy cheeks and a runny nose. In studies, this phytocompound has been found to be able to reduce inflammation markers as well as redness and photosensitivity skin.

“...flavonoids are potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds with mast cell inhibitory actions. Here, we first compared the flavonoid Que and cromolyn on cultured human mast cells. Que and cromolyn (100 µM) can effectively inhibit secretion of histamine and PGD(2).” (Antoniou C et al., 2012)[4]

 

In 2016, researchers published a new paper looking into this supplement’s effects on inflammation. In this review of published data relating to Quercetin and inflammation, the researchers found several benefits for this supplement’s use as a strong anti-inflammatory. Anti-inflammatory supplements are highly useful in promoting good health.[5] Ill-health often stems from chronic inflammation, and so taking an anti-inflammatory supplement is a great way to improve your overall health. This is why many doctors recommend using a daily anti-inflammatory.

2.     Helps to Support a Healthy Circulatory System

 

Another major benefit of this supplement is its ability to support a healthy circulatory system. A large body of research indicates that it may be able to support a healthy circulatory system by encouraging blood flow as well as protecting against LDL oxidation. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are responsible for many major forms of cardiovascular disease. Oxidation of LDL in arteries can have negative health effects over long periods of time.

The metabolites of [this supplement] show partial protective effects on endothelial function and LDL oxidation. [It] produces undisputed antihypertensive and antiatherogenic effects, prevents endothelial dysfunction and protects the myocardium from ischemic damage.” (Perez-Vizcaino F, Duarte J., 2010)[6]

Furthermore, studies have indicated that this supplement may be able to help moderately increase HDL-cholesterol levels. In the body, HDL-cholesterol is used to transport excess cholesterol back to the liver, where it is metabolized into bile. This is called the ‘reverse cholesterol transport system’. It for is this reason that HDL-cholesterol is considered the ‘good’ cholesterol,  as it is actually involved in removing cholesterol from the blood. So a greater ratio of HDL- to LDL-cholesterol is important for good health. [7]

 

3.     Helps to Support a Healthy Metabolism

 

Furthermore, studies have indicated that this supplement may be able to promote a healthy metabolism and to help support healthy cholesterol use in the body. In 2009, a 6-week double-blind placebo study on 93 overweight and obese adults found that administration of this supplement resulted in lowered systolic blood-pressure as well as total cholesterol serum levels for the entire group. This study also correlated with previous findings that Quercetin is able to lower serum LDL levels by preventing LDL oxidation (antioxidant effects). [8]

This is especially relevant in countries where there is a large problem with obesity and high cholesterol levels. According to the Centre for Disease Control in the US, up to 71 million adults in the US (33,5%) have high levels of LDL.[9]

 

4.     Helps to Reduce Feelings of Stress

 

Cortisol is commonly known as the ‘stress-hormone’ and is secreted in response to stress, triggering changes in the body including increased blood pressure and heart rate. High stress levels can also cause headaches, tiredness and a general feeling of negativity. This supplement has been found to be able to inhibit the expression of a critical gene in the synthesis of cortisol, at large servings. This may be a part of the mechanism behind this supplement’s anti-stress properties. Less stress generally means a better feeling of good health.[10]

 

5.     Boosts Physical Energy

 

There has been a lot of debate in scientific circles about whether or not this supplement is able to boost energy levels and increase performance on its own. In 2009, a study was conducted at the University of South Carolina on 12 healthy subjects, where half were given this supplement and the other half a placebo. The results indicated that this supplement could help to boost both endurance and VO2 max levels significantly. Participants were given daily servings of 500 mg over seven days and endurance and VO2 max levels were monitored.

The results: After taking [the supplement] for only seven days, the participants had a 13.2 percent increase in endurance and a 3.9 percent increase in VO2max.” (M Davis et al., 2009)[11]

Recommended Usage

 

The recommended serving size for this supplement is set between 150-500mg daily. LiftMode Quercetin is 95% pure and is sold in a 50-gram re-sealable container with a 0.625cc measuring scoop - measuring approximately 250 mg Quercetin per Scoop. Do not exceed the recommended serving instructions. This supplement can be taken in a capsule form, dissolved in water or juice, or taken sublingually (under the tongue).

 

Quercetin Side Effects and Warnings

 

This supplement is considered as safe in normal doses of around 150-500mg per day. Side effects of large doses can include headaches and tingling in arms and legs.[12]

In 2009, a clinical study found that after 6 weeks of daily 150 mg servings, liver, and kidney function were completely unaffected and neither were hematology or serum electrolyte levels, indicating that regular medium level dosage is safe for long term use.[13]

There is not yet sufficient research indicating this supplement’s safety for pregnant or breastfeeding women. This supplement may interact with numerous medications. Do not take dietary supplements if you are using medication, without first consulting with your doctor. Please speak to your doctor before using Quercetin if you have any underlying medical conditions.

 

Quercetin Glycosides

 

This phytocompound can sometimes be found in a glycoside form. This means that the compound is bound to one or more sugar molecules. Glycoside forms may alter the absorption and metabolism of a supplement. The most important glycosides include:

  • Que-3-O-Rutinoside (Rutin): A naturally-occurring glycoside found in a variety of plant species, consisting of the primary Que compound, bound to rutinose.

 

  • Que-3-O-Rhamnoside: The primary Que compound bound to rhamnose. Also found in some plant species.

  • Que-3-Glucoside (Isoquercetin): The primary Que compound bound to a simple glucose molecule on the 3’ carbon. Often found in food products.

  • Que 3-O-β-D-glucoside: Similar to Isoquercetin, but with some chemical modifications.

  • Que-4'-O-Glucoside (Spiraeoside): Similar to Isoquercetin, but with the glucose sugar bound to the 4’ carbon. Found in some herb species as well as in onions.

  • Que 3-D-galactoside (Hyperin): The primary Que compound bound to a galactose sugar.

  • Que-3,6-Malonylglucoside (Q3MG): Found in some plant and herb species. The primary Que compound bound to glucose with an additional malonyl group.

  • Que-3-O-robinobioside: The primary Que compound bound to a robinose sugar group.

  • Que Rhamnohexoside: The primary Que compound bound to rhamnohexodise, found in several plant species.
