Magnolol is a bioactive compound extracted from Magnolia officinalis and is used as a dietary supplement and ingredient in traditional herbal medicines for its perceived antioxidant and cognitive-enhancing properties. It has the chemical formula C18H18O2 and a molecular weight of 266.33 g/mol.

Magnolol Extract Benefits and Uses

Magnolol is a polyphenolic lignan and an isomer of honokiol. Magnolol acts on GABAA receptors, inhibitory neurotransmitters and hormones that are involved in modulating feelings of calm and relaxation. It is slightly water-soluble.

Anecdotal evidence suggests supplementing with Magnolol may promote healthy bone growth and dental hygiene. Additionally, Magnolol has perceived similarities to its isomer honokiol, notably in regards to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial capacities.

In addition to being rich in antioxidants, Magnolol dietary supplements support healthy brain function and are generally safe with low toxicity rates, even at large serving sizes.

Magnolol supplements may cause mild and rare side effects such as headaches and dizziness. Currently, there isn’t enough information regarding the safety of Magnolol for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or if it can be used by children. Special precaution should be taken for those undergoing a surgery as Magnolol may interact with anaesthesia and other medications.
