Sophora flavescens, often referred to as Ku Shen Gen or bitter root, is a well-regarded herb in traditional Chinese medicine with antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. Sophora flavescens has been used as a herbal remedy in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries. Sophora flavescens possesses over 16 bioactive compounds, of which the most prominent is the alkaloid matrine and its related compounds oxymatrine and sophoridine. Matrine is also found in other plant species of the Sophora family.
