Sophora flavescens, often referred to as Ku Shen Gen or bitter root, is a well-regarded herb in traditional Chinese medicine with antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. The alkaloid Matrine is one of the main constituents in the plant. It has the chemical formula C15H24O2 and a molecular weight of 264.36 g/mol.

Matrine is a water-soluble alkaloid extracted from Sophora flavescens, an evergreen shrub that grows in tropical climates. It is a popular nutraceutical and is commonly taken to improve immune function and support liver health.

Sophora flavescens has been used as a herbal remedy in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries. Sophora flavescens possesses over 16 bioactive compounds, of which the most prominent is the alkaloid matrine and its related compounds oxymatrine and sophoridine. Matrine is also found in other plant species of the Sophora family.
