Tetrahydroharmine (THH) is one of a family of β-carboline (indole-related) harmala alkaloids, found in the Banisteriopsis caapi (yagé, or ayahuasca) vine and related species, as well as in Peganum harmala (which lends these alkaloids their "harmala alkaloid" nomenclature).
Infusions from the yagé vine, together with additional synergistic sacred plants such as Psychotria viridis. are likewise known as ayahuasca and are traditionally prepared by a shaman for ayahuasca rituals, continuing a deep cultural history of sacred ayahuasca use by many tribes in the Amazon region.
Tetrahydroharmine does not exert psychedelic effects in its own right. While not as well studied as more prominent B. caapi alkaloids such as Harmaline and Harmine, Tetrahydroharmine is believed to contribute to the beneficial and mood enhancing effects of ayahuasca.
Scientific research has revealed that (±)-Tetrahydroharmine functions as a mild serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and one isomer may also have gentle weak reversible MAOI activity (much less potent than that of Harmaline or Harmine), allowing for synergies with other natural phytochemicals that may be deactivated by MAO, including indole derivatives.
In addition, THH has nootropic potential. Studies suggest that the neuroprotective β-carboline harmala alkaloids from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, including THH, uniquely promote adult neurogenesis.
The combination of bioactivities in THH may help support healthy serotonin levels and promote a positive and open mood.
Research also has uncovered the harmala alkaloids possess unique bioactivity which may support healthy β cell pancreatic function, and growth hormone secretion in humans.
CAUTION: Tetrahydroharmine is offered as a naturally occurring nootropic compound, and we believe enough evidence is now available that THH may qualify as a valid dietary supplement ingredient, particularly if further research corroborates evidence of its safety when consumed at low to moderate serving size of less than 25mg-50mg. That said, THH should not be consumed by anyone under the age of 18, and should absolutely NEVER be consumed by pregnant or nursing women. It is strongly advised to consult a licensed healthcare professional before consuming THH, to confirm that THH will not cause adverse interactions with medications or preexisting health conditions. The dextrorotatory (+) isomer of Tetrahydroharmine is a the naturally occurring form of the β-Carboline compound found in the Banisteriopsis caapi (yagé, or ayahuasca) vine, and the racemic form, (±)-Tetrahydroharmine, is offered as a raw nootropic compound that has not been adequately researched to be considered safe for consumption as a supplement ingredient in mass market products. (±)-THH is known to possess weak reversible MAOI and mild SSRI properties, and has not been well studied for other pharmacological or toxicological properties. As a result, consumption of (±)-THH (especially in larger amounts than those that can be measured by the enclosed micro transfer scoop, approximately 25mg) may potentially cause adverse interactions with a number of over the counter or prescription medicines, as well as with other serotonergic supplements or tyrosine containing foods. In addition, as with closely related β-Carboline derivatives, Tetrahydroharmine fluoresces brightly under a blacklight, indicating efficient capture and conversion of UV light - and harmala alkaloids are known to potently intercalate with DNA. As a result, it is advised to store THH away from direct sunlight, and to be both aware and cautious of potential DNA damage that could occur with high THH consumption, especially with exposure to UV light. Due to the risk of photosensitivity, it is strongly advised to avoid excessive exposure to UV from sunlight if consuming THH.
Due to country-specific legal and regulatory restrictions, we do not ship THH to certain countries - including Australia.
