Apigenin (Matricaria chamomilla extract) is a flavonoid found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. Like other related compounds, it was once used as a yellow dye for wool. It is the most prevalent flavonoid in Chamomile (both Roman and German varieties) and believed to be responsible for a majority of its relaxing and sedating effects. Chamomile is a staple of a variety of traditional medicines across the globe.
Apigenin possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, cognition enhancing, and relaxing properties through a variety of mechanisms shared by similar flavonoids like Baicalein. Interestingly, Apigenin also may decrease sensitivity to sugar by inhibiting the breakdown of certain starches into glucose, as well as by increasing insulin secretion.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Apigenin are not as well understood as other flavonoids, but some studies indicate it may be especially beneficial for gut inflammation. It also inhibits COX-2 and PGE2. Apigenin is also a potent antioxidant and may act as a photoprotective agent against UVA and UVB light when taken orally.
The calming effect of Apigenin is partially due to its ability to bind the GABA-A receptor and act as a partial modulator. It likely potentiates (and is potentiated by) other flavonoids due to its complex CYP enzyme interactions in the liver. Apigenin also is known for its mood-boosting effects and some studies indicate it may normalize the ERK/CREB/BDNF pathway and enhance BDNF expression in certain cases. This may account for some of its cognition-enhancing effects.
