Vitamin E Acetate (α-Tocopheryl acetate) is a more stable, less oxidation prone synthetic form of Vitamin E, an essential nutrient and lipid-soluble antioxidant protecting cell membranes from oxidation by reacting with lipid radicals produced in the lipid peroxidation chain reaction. Its chemical formula is C31H52O3 and the molecular mass is 472.743 g/mol.
Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate) Benefits and Uses
When taken as a dietary supplement, Vitamin E Acetate is used mainly to ensure healthy total nutritional intake of Vitamin E. Unlike the readily oxidized and degraded free forms of Vitamin E, including free tocopherols and tocotrienols in their α (alpha), β (beta), γ (gamma), and δ (delta) forms, α-tocopheryl acetate is not degraded notably by air, visible light or UV-radiation. α-Tocopherol acetate is hydrolyzed to free α-tocopherol and acetic acid when ingested.
Vitamin E Acetate is known by a number of alternative names including:
- 2,5,7,8-Tetramethyl-2-[4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl]-3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyran-6-yl acetate
- all-rac-α-Tocopherol acetate
- all-rac-α-Tocopheryl acetate
- DL-α-Tocopherol acetate
- DL-α-Tocopheryl acetate
- all-rac-alpha-Tocopherol acetate
- all-rac-alpha-Tocopheryl acetate
- DL-alpha-Tocopherol acetate
- DL-alpha-Tocopheryl acetate
Scientific Consensus
Using this supplement at the recommended serving size is likely safe for most adults. Most supplemental doses are from the adult RDA of 15 mg – 600 mg/day of “Vitamin E”, with equivalency to 1mg of Vitamin E defined as 1 mg of D-alpha-tocopherol in the unstable pure oil form, or 2.2 mg of all-rac-α-Tocopheryl acetate in oil form. Our recommended Serving Size of 600mg of all-rac-α-Tocopheryl acetate powder, formulated at 50% all-rac-α-Tocopheryl acetate oil by weight, is thus equivalent to approximately 120mg of “Vitamin E”.
