Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an amino acid synthesized in the kidney, liver and brain from lysine and methionine. It is recognized as the most absorbable form of L-Carnitine having the ability to efficiently cross the blood-brain barrier.

L-Carnitine’s main chemical function is to help the body produce energy through the mitochondrial oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. Anecdotally, this dietary supplement is used for its perceived abilities to promote brain health as well as enhance metabolism and energy levels.

Scientific Consensus

Supplementing with this product is likely to be safe, even at larger serving sizes. Doses of up to 3 grams per day have been safely administered for a period of 3 weeks without any adverse effects.

L-Carnitine may cause side effects for people with certain underlying conditions such as those with an under-active thyroid, bipolar disorder, and drug-induced neuropathy. There is not enough data to say whether L-Carnitine is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or if it can be used by children.
