Oleamide (cis-9,10-octadecenoamide) is a derivative of oleic acid and is a functional fatty acid in the human brain. It is biosynthesized from oleic acid and ammonia and metabolized by FAAH. It has a molecular weight of 281.484 g/mol and the chemical formula C18H35NO.

Description

Oleamide Benefits and Uses

Oleamide (also known as cis-9,10-octadecenoamide) is biosynthesized from oleic acid and ammonia in the human brain and the brains of most mammals. It is known to help regulate sleep patterns and to interact with the GABAergic system. It is also remarkably efficient at augmenting the signalling of the serotonergic system and is able to do so even at very low concentrations (as low as 1nM).

In mammals, it accumulates in the brain and nervous system during sleep deprivation. Anecdotally, it may have similar effects to other relaxing supplements. However, the significance of its benefits will only be fully understood once further research becomes available.

Oleamide supplements are also known by a few different names, including:

  • (Z)-Octadec-9-enamide
  • Oleylamide
  • 9-Octadecenamide
  • (Z)-9-Octadecenamide
  • 9,10-Octadecenoamide
  • Oleic acid amide
  • Cis-9,10-octadecenoamide
  • Oleyl Amide
  • Cerebrodiene

Scientific Consensus

Oleamide is a relatively new supplement and further research is required to fully understand the significance of its benefits, uses, and side effects. Using this supplement at the recommended serving size is likely safe for most adults.

DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED SERVING SIZE. Use with caution. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
