The roasting process decreases the level of Chlorogenic Acid contained in the beans – the bioactive component responsible for many of the seed’s healthful effects. Since Green Coffee beans are not roasted, they contain higher amounts of Chlorogenic Acid.  

 

Green Coffee Bean Extract (GCBE) is often consumed for its perceived benefits in promoting a healthy metabolism and a healthy circulatory system. It may also offer antioxidant effects that promote healthy aging and cognitive function. One murine model found administration of GCBE (28% Chlorogenic Acid) induced a significant decrease in the blood pressure in hypertensive rats due to the effect of 5-caffeoylquinic acid, a component of GCBE.

 

Currently, there aren’t many human trials testing the efficacy of GBCE on weight. However, there is one review of human studies that indicated GCBE may help to promote a healthy metabolism. It should be noted that the duration and number of subjects in the review was small. Further research is needed.

Supplementing with Green Coffee Bean Extract at recommended servings of 240-600 mcg/day for a 50% chlorogenic acid supplement is generally considered safe.

 

The side effects of Green Coffee Extract are mild and resemble those of regular coffee. These include heart palpitations, frequent urination, anxiety, restlessness, and an upset stomach. There is not currently enough data regarding the safety of this supplement for pregnant or breastfeeding women, therefore should be avoided.
