Matrine Benefits and Uses

Matrine is a water-soluble alkaloid extracted from Sophora flavescens, an evergreen shrub that grows in tropical climates. It is a popular nutraceutical and is commonly taken to improve immune function and liver health.

Sophora flavescens has been used as a herbal remedy in traditional Chinese medicine for many years, with therapeutic uses as an anti-inflammatory agent. Traditional practitioners used Matrine for its heat-reducing, damp-drying and diuretic effects. The herb also exhibits therapeutic effects on allergic reactions and promotes healthy skin function.

Sophora flavescens possesses over 16 bioactive compounds, of which the most prominent is the alkaloid matrine and its related compounds oxymatrine and sophoridine.  Matrine is also found in other plant species of the Sophora family.

Anecdotally, Matrine may offer some important anti-inflammatory benefits. Studies indicate Matrine supports immune function by mediating proinflammatory mechanisms in the body. What’s more is Matrine promotes restful sleep and relaxation and has purported anti-nociceptive effects, (pain-relief), anti-viral and antioxidant effects. As a natural anti-parasitic, It is often stacked with other similar supplements like Artemisia.

Scientific Consensus:

Matrine extract is considered safe and effective when taken in recommended doses.

There has been a reported case of liver in a study showing Matrine may have hepatotoxic effects, i.e. can damage the liver. In contrast, another study indicated matrine has no toxic effects on the liver. Hence, the available data regarding the herb’s side effects is confusing and should be subject to further research.

There is not enough data to say whether Matrine is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or if it can be used by children.
