Passion Flower Kanna Tea Benefits and Uses

The succulent Kanna plant, also called Channa or Kougoed by indigenous South African cultures, has been used for centuries in social rituals for its subtle mood-enhancing and stress-relieving properties. We've created an innovative way to enjoy this time-honored botanical.

Kanna contains alkaloids like mesembrine that improve the body's innate ability to cope with stress, elevate mood, and promote feelings of well-being and contentment. While researchers are still studying the precise mechanisms, our high-quality Kanna extract provides a wide spectrum of active alkaloids, each with its own beneficial properties.

Passionflower leaf contains many calming and healthful phytochemicals.  Ours is carefully harvested in Italy, with all its aromas, flavonoids and alkaloids optimally preserved.  As a tea, passionflower is known for its clear amber color and rich flavor, with satisfying notes of garden flower and clean hay, hints of citrus, and gently earthy, grassy and faintly floral aroma, that fades to a lingering refreshing light feeling and pleasant, subtly sweet aftertaste on your tongue. It serves as the perfect relaxing complement to energizing Kanna.

Our delightful tea is formulated to provide a smooth blend, with only a stir needed before enjoying.

Sustainably Harvested

LiftMode's Passion Flower Kanna Tea starts with organic Passionflower leaf harvested in Italy under high EU cultivation and quality standards.

We have blended on top of this base, our carefully sourced Kanna extract made from selected strains of Sceletium tortuosum plants carefully cultivated and harvested in South Africa using sustainable practices, providing economic opportunity to the communities that have a long tradition of Kanna use.

The specialized Kanna extraction process ensures an extract with high purity and potency. Every lot is independently analyzed by a US laboratory to verify a robust alkaloid profile and non-detectable levels of any contaminants - confirming the result as an unadulterated powerful full-spectrum Kanna extract capturing the plant's full synergy of mood-supportive alkaloids, just as nature intended.

Kanna Safety Research and Cautions

Due to confounding sources of information online, there are divergent views on the safety of Kava for the liver. There are two important factors to consider:

There are a few potentially liver-damaging phytochemicals present in the Kava plant, but their concentration is very strain-dependent, and larger concentrations of unwanted compounds are present in the above-ground leaves and stem – parts of the plant that are not traditionally used. If an unscrupulous extract is made from the whole plant, including above-ground portions, or with non-Noble Kava varietals such as "tudei" or wild Kava varieties, and especially if using harsh solvents such as ethanol or acetone, then potentially liver-stressing alkaloids and kavalactone derivatives such as flavokavains A and B (flavokawains) may be pulled out of the plant in substantial amounts and end up in the final product. Some studies exploring the effects of Kava on the liver have been based on the effects of these types of extracts.

There are also a variety of strains of Kava Kava. Some strains, such as the Tudei strains, contain higher amounts of flavokawains as well as heavy, longer-lasting kavalactones such as dihydromethysticin, hence can have a cumulative effect both in terms of their effects and their load on the liver. At the recommended serving size, this is still not typically an issue. Still, prolonged use, especially in conjunction with other aggravating factors such as alcohol use, paracetamol/acetaminophen use, or mold-derived toxins that may be present in poorly dried or handled Kava root, may, in conjunction, put enough strain on the liver of sensitive individuals to cause rare cases of serious hepatotoxicity. Conversely, the cultivars with favorable Kava chemotypes known as ‘Noble’ Kava Strains have a reduced concentration of flavokavains that put pressure on the liver, and a proportionately greater concentration of desirable kavalactones that studies show pose little to no risk for healthy individuals at the recommended consumption quantities.

We focus strongly on selecting only mature, noble Kava, as well as selecting Kava extracts designed to absolutely minimize flavokavain content, and maximize desirable kavalactone content through the use of only high-quality noble Vanuatu Kava root. Although high quality, properly prepared, and carefully extracted Kava - such as the Kava extract-based products we offer - is considered safe for use by healthy adults, we advise moderation and do not recommend using this product more than three days per week, or in amounts exceeding 12 servings per week at the recommended serving size. Furthermore, our Kava products should not be consumed with any alcohol or sedatives or prescription or over-the-counter medications - and users should avoid driving or using heavy machinery after consuming Kava products.

Potential side effects are rare, but may include:

Allergic reaction, dizziness, drowsiness, pupil dilatation, fatigue, low mood, skin problems including scaly or itchy skin (typically after prolonged heavy daily use), upset stomach, headaches, liver damage, impaired motor coordination, and visual disturbances. There is not enough data to say whether Kava extract is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women and, therefore, should be avoided. Please consult your healthcare provider before consuming Kava extract.
